NJCRC partner Rebuild by Design has released an “Atlas of Disaster: New Jersey” report that sheds light on the devastating impact of climate disasters across New Jersey from 2011-21, with recent data extending to 2023. The report shows federal major disaster occurrences, which counties FEMA’s dollars have supported (post disaster), the energy reliability, social vulnerability, and electoral districts for the State of New Jersey.

The report calls for new, long-term funding sources for climate adaptation, such as upgrades to sewer infrastructure, raising roads, helping communities move from high-risk areas, and in place using the land to create green buffers to reduce risk and premature death from extreme weather events.

“We must find a way to fund resilience projects if we are to tackle the challenges that come with thriving in a changing environment with rising seas and increasing climate hazards,” said Laura Kerr, co-managing director of the NJCRC and senior research engineer at Stevens Institute of Technology.
